Old GE U50C

The GE U50 C was a 5000 hp locomotive built by General Electric which utilized two diesel engines under one long hood. Forty were built, with the majority being sold to the Union Pacific Railway.

Interesting Facts:

  • In essence, the U50 C is the same as the DD40 locomotive, with the goal being to provide more power with fewer locomotives. The main difference being that the DD40 class have eight-wheel trucks, while the U50 had six.
  • The U50 C only saw service for five years, with final scrapping happening in 1978.
  • The in-game U50 C wears a pseudo Southern Pacific paint scheme. This is incorrect, as the Southern Pacific variant used a set of B-B-B-B trucks, or two sets of four axle trucks and was classified as a U50. Beyone that the internal workings were identical.
  • SP only owned three of the locomotives, and all were scrapped within four years of purchase.
The GE U50C was a 5,000 hp (3,700 kW) twin-engined diesel locomotive built by GE Transportation Systems between November 1969 and November 1971 solely for the Union Pacific. Development of the U50C was to the same UP specification that produced the EMD DDA40X "Centennial" units—a requirement for a high power locomotive for the railroad's high-speed freight train.
