| Between 1982 and 1990, thirteen V 200.0 diesel locomotives were sold to various private railway operators in Italy. In 2000 two smaller companies, which both possessed some V 200.0's, merged into one larger, thus creating the Ferrovie Emilia-Romagna (FER). In 2003 FER acquired three more V 200.0s (which they dubbed FER D220) from the various track maintenance contractors based in Italy. Between 2002 and 2005, all of the FER D220 locomotives underwent refurbishment in Zagreb which included replacement of the existing Maybach or Mercedes engines with Caterpillar V8 engines, modern digital engine control systems in place of the original electro-mechanical control system, and all the locomotives were fitted with new Voith transmissions. The locomotives were painted in a typical Italian tri-colour (green-white-red) livery.|
