The EMD F40PH is diesel-electric locomotive built from 1976 to 1992 . It was originally intended to haul short to medium-length trains on Amtrak's shorter routes but soon after it entered service it began to replace the long-distance EMD SDP40F. The F40PH was purchased by many commuter railroads like MBTA, Tri-Rail, CalTrain, NJ Transit or GO Transit. Dozens of F40PH units still remain in service on various tourist and freight railroads.
