Big Boy was the name of the Union Pacific's 4000 classes 4-8-8-4 articulated steam locomotives, built between 1941 and 1944 by ALCO. The 25 Big Boys were the only trains to have the 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement, which combined two sets of eight driving wheels with a four-wheel leading truck for stability entering curves and a four-wheel trailing truck to support the large firebox.
| The Big Boys were one of the biggest steam engines ever built and the only locomotives to utilize the 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement. 25 of them were built for Union Pacific, intended to haul heavy freight trains over the long and relatively steep grades of the Wasatch Mountains in Utah. They were designed with stability at 60 miles per hour (100 km/h), reliability and safety in mind.|
