The Berkshire locomotives were designed and built by Lima Locomotive Works. They were initially based on H-7 Mikado design, but Lima came up with a locomotive that included a larger firebox that needed an extra trailing axle giving the locomotive a 2-8-4 wheel arrangement. Today, impressively two of these large steamers still operate, the Nickel Plate Road no.765 and Pere Marquette no.1225 (which has become quite famous in recent years as the Polar Express).
